Four-stroke motors are wildly popular due to them being powerful yet quiet. They can be found in lawn mowers, motorcycles, and even marine outboards. What Is a Four-Stroke Motor?

Four-stroke motors are a type of internal combustion engine that utilizes a four-stroke combustion process. It starts with the intake stroke, in which a piston moves downward to bring an air-fuel mixture into the combustion chamber. This is followed by the compression stroke, which is when the intake valve closes to seal up the combustion chamber and the crankshaft rotates in order to compress the air-fuel mixture. The piston moves up the cylinder to the top of the combustion chamber. Next comes the power stroke, which is when the spark plug ignites the air-fuel mixture and forces the piston back down the cylinder. Last comes the exhaust stroke, which is when the exhaust valve opens up to expel gas from the chamber. This stroke also moves the piston back up and applies oil so that the four-stroke cycle can repeat from the beginning. 

 

Why Choose a Four-Stroke Motor?

Four-stroke outboards are usually compared to two-stroke outboards. Two-stroke outboards have a two-stroke engine cycle, making them much lighter, simpler, and easier to maintain. While it’s true that four-stroke outboards are more complex, and thus heavier and more expensive to maintain, they are also more fuel efficient and powerful. It certainly doesn’t hurt that four-stroke outboards also run a lot smoother and quieter than their two-stroke counterparts.
